Lesson One- Word Skills Assignment

Watch powerpoint on Word Skills Lesson One and take notes of the word parts in your daybook.

For each word part, find the word part used in a sentence/headline/title of a magazine/article/newspaper. Cut it out and paste it next to the word part and its definition in your daybook as a real world example.

 

Lesson Two- Word Skills Assignment

Watch powerpoint on Word Skills Lesson Two and take notes of the word parts in your daybook creating an Illustrated Vocabulary picture. See illustration below. This should be down for each word part.

Ex. Write the affix (prefix, suffix). Write its definition. Use one of the words given as an example to create an illustrated vocabulary picture. The picture should represent the affix to better help you remember it and the example word. All should be done pictorially.

Lesson Three- Word Skills Assignment

For each word, choose one of the example words and complete a bio poem for that word.

The student who researched the word electricity traced the word back to its 1646 meaning, "attract by friction." She learned that the term's "family tree" has two major branches; elek, meaning "friction, heat" and tron, meaning "water" and "diffusion." The biopoem used these two parts for the first name and last name.

Lesson Four- Word Skills Assignment

Because this is a lesson on numbers, write the definition and the examples in your daybook. Then, search a magazine or a newspaper for a visual representation of the word skill and paste it in your daybook.

 

Lesson Five- Word Skills Assignment

Watch the powerpoint and take notes for this Word Skill lesson. Choose one of the example words to complete the following in order to help you remember the affix and context surrounding it.

 

  1. Write the root of the word in capital letters in red in the middle of the page. Draw an arrow and write the meaning of the root and the language of its origin.
  2. Write the prefix in black to the left of the root. Draw an arrow and write the meaning of the prefix.
  3. Write the suffix in blue to the right of the root. Draw an arrow and write the meaning of the suffix.
  4. In the lower left corner, write three words with the same root.
  5. Put your quickdraw in the lower right of the page.
  6. Write the author's definition and part of speech at the top of the card.

For each affix, write a sentence, draw a picture, or sketch a symbol to help you remember it.

 

Lesson Seven- Word Skills Assignment

 

In your daybook, write down the affix, definition, and the example words.

When you think you have a good sense of what the words mean (the example words), write an illustrative sentence for each word.  An illustrative sentence is one that illustrates your understanding of the word.  If I can’t tell from the sentence that you know what the word means, you may be asked to write another sentence.
